Install 2×2 edge metal. Make sure you cover inside the gutter to ensure proper drainage. Nail metal every two feet. Cut roof angles in 2 pieces to prevent metal from causing lifting the roof.
Use plastic caps to attach the underlayment to the roof. Use enough nails as needed to ensure you can walk on the underlayment safely.Avoid staples since they can damage the roof underlayment. Underlayment goes over the metal in the eves and underneath on the gables. In areas with snow, use ice and water shield at the eaves, valleys, and roof penetrations.
Use a line in the center to get the metals centered on the valleys. Keeping the center of the metal will prevent causing unleveled areas where water will push towards your roof.
Overlap at least 8 inches over the joints if you need to use more than 1 Pc.
Cut started the strip in half. If you have a roof area, more than 50 feet make sure joints stay no less than 6 inches.
Install 4-5 nails spaced evenly.
Keep 3/4 inch overlap pass the edge to keep water away from the fascia board.
Allow your edges with starter shingle on valleys keeping a 2-inch space for water flow and 3/4 inch on gables for fascia protection.
Make sure you have the right air pressure for your nail gun. Correct pressure will prevent overdriving nails. On hot days you will need less air pressure than on cold days.
Nail in the area marked on shingles. The number of nails depends on several factors. Refer to manufacturer instructions on the shingle wrappers.
Keep at least 6-inch joints
Using less than 6-inch joints causes water to travel onto your roof sheeting and causing leaks overtime.
Ridge vent is a great way to get the hot air from your attic out. Use the ventilation product from the same manufacturer as your shingles.
Use 10-inch caps to prevent rain with the wind to push water into the venting spaces.
Use longer nails: 1 3/4 to attach ridge vent and ridge caps.
You will spend lots of money on materials.
Even if you install your roof yourself, make sure you register your warranty. Ask your supplier for the required forms. Sometimes materials are defective, and you can get your materials replaced if you do your part and register your warranty.
